Westboro Baptist Church Wrong to Exploit Military Deaths

I fully believe that Christianity should confront popular culture and offer in many cases an alternative – to offer the right choice. However, that does not mean that we are incapable of taking it too far. We have to constantly gauge our actions and decide when they are truly in bad taste, and more importantly, out of the character of God. Such is the case with “Westboro Baptist church, whose members have picketed the funerals of military personnel killed in Iraq and Afghanistan, claiming the deaths are punishment for the country’s tolerance of homosexuality.”

Here’s an excerpt from a Fox New article on the subject:

“The father of a Marine killed in Iraq took the stand in his invasion of privacy suit against a fundamentalist church that pickets soldiers’ funerals, saying protesters carrying signs at his son’s burial made him sick to his stomach.”

It is unfortunate that this church has chosen to exploit military deaths in this manner, especially since there is a good chance that a number of those they are exploiting are likely Christians themselves.

Interesting Article from Dinesh D’Souza

Dinesh D’Souza, author of What’s So Great About Christianity, has a rather enlightening article on Townhall.com; it is a must read for all Christian parents.

Here is an excerpt:

It seems atheists have developed a comprehensive strategy to win the minds of the next generation. The strategy can be described simply: let the religious people breed them, and we will educate them to despise their parents’ beliefs. Many people think that the secularization of the minds of our young people is the inevitable consequence of learning and maturing. In fact, it is to a large degree orchestrated by teachers and professors to promote anti-religious agendas.

Why the hostility to religion? “Faith is one of the world’s great evils, comparable to the smallpox virus but harder to eradicate,” writes Richard Dawkins, author of The God Delusion. “Religion is capable of driving people to such dangerous folly that faith seems to me to qualify as a kind of mental illness.”
