There has been some concern by evangelicals over Fred Thompson. Although it should be clear that this concern has been blown out of proportion by the media, we should address it nonetheless. The concern was expressed by Dr. James Dobson when he said, “Everyone knows he’s conservative and has come out strongly for the things that the pro-family movement stands for,” Dobson said in the interview. “[But] I don’t think he’s a Christian — at least that’s my impression.” Dobson went on to say that he wasn’t sure whether evangelicals would support a candidate who is not a Christian.
While I understand what Dobson is getting at, he is ultimate wrong on two accounts. First, evangelicals should not vote according to a candidate’s religion. Second, I don’t think his assessment is correct – in that I don’t think most evangelicals would be opposed to a non-Christian candidate. The only concern I have with any candidate is that their politics are right. While the Jury is still out on Thompson, he seems to be the best candidate mentioned thus far on the right side of the aisle. In the end, however, if the candidate’s want evangelicals to vote for them, they simply need to be a true conservative.
Finally, we should note the response from a Thompson spokesperson stating, “Thompson is indeed a Christian. He was baptized into the Church of Christ.” So, perhaps the issue is resolved. Still, we should take note for future candidates not to be overly concerned with a candidate’s religious affiliation.
