Should we care if Fred Thompson is a Christian?

Fred Thompson

There has been some concern by evangelicals over Fred Thompson. Although it should be clear that this concern has been blown out of proportion by the media, we should address it nonetheless. The concern was expressed by Dr. James Dobson when he said, “Everyone knows he’s conservative and has come out strongly for the things that the pro-family movement stands for,” Dobson said in the interview. “[But] I don’t think he’s a Christian — at least that’s my impression.” Dobson went on to say that he wasn’t sure whether evangelicals would support a candidate who is not a Christian.

While I understand what Dobson is getting at, he is ultimate wrong on two accounts. First, evangelicals should not vote according to a candidate’s religion. Second, I don’t think his assessment is correct – in that I don’t think most evangelicals would be opposed to a non-Christian candidate. The only concern I have with any candidate is that their politics are right. While the Jury is still out on Thompson, he seems to be the best candidate mentioned thus far on the right side of the aisle. In the end, however, if the candidate’s want evangelicals to vote for them, they simply need to be a true conservative.

Finally, we should note the response from a Thompson spokesperson stating, “Thompson is indeed a Christian. He was baptized into the Church of Christ.” So, perhaps the issue is resolved. Still, we should take note for future candidates not to be overly concerned with a candidate’s religious affiliation.

‘Parents banned from school’s homosexual seminar’

One News Now is reporting that, “A Massachusetts pro-family activist is angered that parents were barred from observing a homosexual indoctrination seminar at a high school his child currently attends.” This, of course, is the second such event reported in the last few weeks (See this post). It used to be enough to simply say that it is sad to see something like this happen. No longer can we allow ourselves such complacency. This is not just sad; it is an all out attack on the very foundations of Christianity. As Christians, we have to confront these problems in our public schools. We can’t simply send our kids to private schools and ignore what happens elsewhere.

On the same topic of homosexuality, Matt Barber writes:

Marine General Peter Pace – decorated war hero and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff – continues to find himself fending off a vicious and unfamiliar rapid fire assault from his extreme left-flank. In recent days, the good general has been widely and unjustly vilified by America’s self-appointed thought police as they step up their unified and widespread campaign of homofascist speech enforcement.

During a recent interview with the Chicago Tribune, Pace violated one of the cardinal rules of political correctness by noting that, “homosexual acts between two individuals are immoral.”

It would seem that after two thousand years of clear theological thinking on sexuality, we now find ourselves in a world where we are no longer allowed to hold to the principled approach founded in Christian doctrine and tradition from the days of the early church until now. We – as in Christians – are quickly going out of style. The scariest aspect of this issue is that the attack is not just coming from the secular world, but also from within the church. See: Episcopal council reiterates church’s support for homosexuality.

The key aspect of this issue that is ignored, however, is that it has become increasingly more clear that the family unit of a male father and a female mother is the most natural and effective social institution. Albert Mohler is reporting about this very issue as well. He writes about a book by David Blankenhorn:

In “Defining Marriage Down . . . is No Way to Save It,” published in this week’s edition of The Weekly Standard, Blankenhorn summarizes his argument. In a nutshell — marriage has been seriously weakened and is now threatened as our central social institution. Marriage has been “deinstitutionalized” through legal, cultural, ideological, and lifestyle revolutions. Proposals about same-sex marriage can come only after marriage has been seriously weakened as an institution. But, even though proponents of same-sex marriage claim to value marriage as an institution, the real impact of same-sex marriage would be the further deinstitutionalization of marriage itself.

Clearly, this issue is an enormous issue that will not only change the culture, but may well destabilize it.

How a Horse Shares the Love of God

Wow, what a morning! I was up a little earlier this morning and so I had a chance to listen to the Focus on the Family broadcast as I drove in to work. The guests on the show were Troy and Kim Meeder, founders of the Crystal Peaks Youth Ranch. Kim was sharing some of the stories that she has experienced working the ranch and sharing the love of Jesus Christ. One of them in particular touched me deeply.

She described how a boy was brought in by a counselor. When she saw the boy, she could see that he was broken and bruised. The counselor told her how the boy’s father punched the boy in his mouth and broke his teeth – and how the father would get drunk and have the boy run around in the yard while he shot at him with a rifle. Kim worked with the boy and had set him up on a pony. The timid boy sat there for a moment, not sure what to do next. The horse apparently had his own plans.

The horse did something that Kim said, “I have never seen a horse do before or since.” The horse turned his head around all the way to the boy and gave the boy what appeared to be a hug. Wow! I was brought to tears by the excitement that this broken boy had because for once something showed him love. Of course, my telling of the story does not do it justice.

If you want to hear this story told the way it should be, along with more amazing stories about this ranch, visit the site at: http://www.crystalpeaksyouthranch.org. They have a book available with these amazing stories in it (see the cover below).

Hope Rising Cover
